Guide to UK Work Visa applications, with and without Sponsorship

Dreaming of a career in Great Britain? Even with the stricter UK Immigration Rules coming up in 2026, there is still no job cap, no resident labour market test, and a relatively streamlined system. 2026 could well be your year to secure a UK work visa - whether you're a tech whiz, healthcare hero, an engineer or a financial consultant, or a proven talent in the creative industry. From the revamped Skilled Worker visa (now with a £41,700 minimum salary and degree-level skills) to sponsor-free routes like Ancestral or Global Talent, we've got the roadmap. The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll achieve the goal of permanent residency (Indefinite Leave).
Visa categories without Sponsorship:
Ancestral, also called Person with UK Ancestry
For Commonwealth citizens with a grandparent who was born in the UK. A visa is for 5 years and allows to work without Sponsorship. Settlement after 5 years. Possibly changing to 10 years in April 2026, with some options to reduce that to 5 years for high earners or 9 years for a higher level of English.
Dependant
Dependant visas are issued to family members of the main applicant, such as Skilled Worker Dependant or Student Dependant. Also called Dependant Partner or PBS Dependant. The word “Dependant” implies the visa is attached (“depends”) to a family member having the “main” visa. Unlike the main visa, however, Dependant visa allows to work for any employer without sponsorship. Only immediate family members are covered: husband, wife, partner of 2 years and children aged 18 years of age (at the 1st application). Since this visa allows so much freedom of working in the UK, further restrictions were introduced with the most recent Rules. Students can only bring dependants if the main applicant is studying a PhD level course. Graduates can only include family members who already have Student Dependant visas. Care Workers, who had their 1st visa from 11 March 2024, cannot bring dependants.
Global Talent
Instead of job offer, this visa is based on endorsement from an approved organisation: Arts Council, British Academy, Tech Nation etc. Visa is for up to 5 years and leads to ILR after 3 to 5 years. Possibly changing to 10 years in April 2026, but there will be options to reduce that, such as to 9 years by having a higher level of English, or to 5 years for high earners.
Graduate route
A very popular route for international students. You can come on a Student visa to study a degree at a UK university and obtain a Graduate visa upon completion. Currently, the visa is for 2 years, but changing to 18 months for those applying (graduating) from January 2027. Does not lead to Settlement but allows to work, run a business, look for sponsorship from UK employers and switch to another category. Most common switches are to Skilled Worker, Dependant or to a Partner of a UK citizen.
High Potential Individual (HPI)
For graduates from top international universities during the last 5 years. The list of acceptable universities is published every year and can be found here. A visa is for 2 years for most graduates, for PhD graduates it is 3 years. Allows to work with sponsorship, does not lead to Settlement, but allows to switch to another category, such as Skilled Worker or a Partner of a UK citizen.
India Young Professionals Scheme
It is similar to a working holiday visa, for Indian nationals, aged 18 – 30 years who have a Bachelor degree. It is operated via a ballot system, where you have to submit your application and hope it will be selected for a place. A visa is for 2 years, allows to work without sponsorship. Does not lead to Settlement but allows to switch to another category, such as Skilled Worker or a Partner.
Innovator Founder
Student
Youth Mobility Scheme - working holiday
This visa is for certain nationals from the approved list. You can apply if you are aged 18 – 35 years and you are from Australia, New Zealand, Canada or South Korea. You can apply if you are aged 18 – 30 years and are from Japan, Iceland, Uruguay and some other countries as well as hold a British Overseas Citizen or similar status. There is a ballot system if you are from Taiwan or hold a Hong Kong SRA passport. A visa is for 2 years, allows to work without sponsorship. Does not lead to Settlement but allows to switch to another category, such as Skilled Worker or a Partner of a UK citizen.
Visas that require Sponsorship from a UK employer
Global Mobility
A group of several temporary work visas, all require sponsorship. Used by multinational companies with a branch in the UK, to train workers or to scale up the business. This group replaced the old Intra-Company Transfer visas and also incorporated the old Representative of Overseas Business category. Does not lead to Settlement but allows to switch to another category, such as Skilled Worker, Partner etc.
International Sportsperson
Health and Care Worker
It is a part of Skilled Worker visa and requires sponsorship, but for certain jobs in the healthcare sector. The Care element has now been stopped and the new care workers cannot come to the UK anymore. A list of the remaining eligible (Heath) SOC codes in these occupations can be found here. Employers can offer a salary lower than £41,700 and the workers do not pay Immigration Health Surcharge. Like the main Skilled Worker visa, this category leads to Settlement after 5 years, but there are plans to increase it to 10 or even 15 years.
Skilled Worker
This is the main work visa category, requiring sponsorship from a UK company. From 22 July 2025 only jobs at degree level are eligible, defined as “Level 6 or above” jobs, also called Higher Skilled jobs on the official UK Government website. It does not mean a worker needs a degree, instead a job has to be skilled enough to be seen as a degree-level by the Government classification (SOC job codes). For example, an engineering graduate, offered to work as an engineer, will meet this requirement. But an engineering graduate, working as an office manager or restaurant manager, won’t be eligible.
The blanket salary for Skilled Workers is GBP 41,700 per year, before taxes. Can be lower for those switching from a Student or Graduate visa, or those aged 25 or younger.
There are some jobs at Medium skill level (below degree-level jobs) that are still eligible, such as a job on the Immigration Salary List or Temporary Shortage List. Workers on these jobs can also be paid a lower salary than GBP 41,700 per year, but cannot include their families as dependants. Skilled Workers in Medium-level jobs, who started in this category before 22 July 2025, can still include dependants. Care workers can only bring dependants if they started on a care worker visa before 11 March 2024.
