What is a UK Visit Visa, and who can apply from Dubai?
A UK Visit Visa allows up to 6 months in the UK for tourism, family visits, or short business trips. Anyone in Dubai/UAE can apply, but the Home Office is strict – you must prove a source of income, strong ties outside the UK and genuine intent to leave after your trip. Refusals are common around the world, but residents in the UAE and Gulf states usually have a high chance of approval due to their secure work in the UAE or substantial property/investment ties. Applicants having a stable job in any country, with he salary paid into a bank account, also have a good chance of approval.
What are the differences between ETA, eVisa and Visitor visa?
Electronic Travel Authorisaton (ETA) replaced visa-free travel for nationals who don’t need a visitor/tourist visa for the UK, such as Europeans, Americans, Australians, Malaysians etc. Before 2025 they could just travel without a visa but now they have to do a simple online form before travelling, hence the name ETA. Like American ESTA or Australian ETA, it is not a visa, just an electronic pre-authorisation and a small payment.
Visitor visa remains in place for nationals who normally need a UK visa even for a holiday, known as “visa nationals”: Indian, Filipino, Indonesian, Chinese, Russian, Thai, most African nationals (Egyptian, Nigerian, S. African etc). If you are one of them, you have to apply for a Visitor visa as normal, with the supporting evidence like bank statements, work and family ties outside the UK etc, do the biometrics and wait for the decision. If your application has been approved, you get a Visitor visa.
eVisa now replaced almost all visa stickers (vignettes). When your visa application has been approved, you get a digital visa rather than sticker in the passport. Most visitor/holiday visa applicants are getting eVisa from 2026. Many work and family applicants for residence visas already received their eVisas from 2025.
My nationality normally needs a visa to the UK, do I still need to apply or can I now use ETA?
ETA is only for nationals who don’t need “a proper visa” for a holiday or a short trip. Visa nationals (Indian, Filipino etc) still need to apply for a Visitor visa as before, with bank statements etc, but may get a digital visa when – and if - approved.
How much does a UK Visit Visa from Dubai cost?
The Government fee ranges from GBP 127 for a 6-month visa and goes up for a longer visa. If it’s your first application, or first in a long time, better to start with a 6-month visa, it is still multiple-entry. The Government may still issue a short visa, even if you pay an expensive fee for a longer one. After the 1st visa, you could travel to the UK and build up “a history of compliance”, then try for a longer visa.
How long does it take to get a UK Visit Visa from Dubai/UAE?
Standard processing 3 weeks from biometrics. Fast-track services are available for extra Government fees. The process starts from an online application, then biometrics (fingerprints) in a local visa centre (Dubai, Sharjah etc). But the documents are considered centrally by the visa officers in Shefield in the UK, and decisions are made by them. These are people you have to “impress”, which will be entirely remotely based on the documents and not an interview. In short, you won’t be able to “talk” to anyone, including in case of a refusal.
How long can I stay in the UK? Can I have a longer multiple-entry visa?
Any visitor can stay maximum 6 months from each entry. ETA or Visitor visa, within its validity, allows multiple trips, but each single trip must be maximum 6 months. It is not “6 months per 12 months” as many people think, instead it is 6 months from each entry to the UK (as long as the visa or ETA is valid). For example, you can come for 2 weeks, then go to France for 1 week, and come back to the UK, so your 6 months restart again upon return from France.
How can I use a 5 or 10-year Visitor visa?
You can come and go during that time, having done an application and biometrics only once. But you can still stay maximum 6 months at a time, ie from each entry. Also, you cannot use this visa for “de facto residence”, you cannot use the NHS, work, attend a school etc. If you wish to stay longer or make the UK your home, you need to apply for a residence-type visa, such as Spouse/Partner, Skilled Worker, Ancestral etc.
What if I'm applying for a UK Visit Visa just for a holiday from Dubai?
Holiday applications face high scrutiny – the Home Office often doubts "genuine visitor" status. Strong proof of ties (steady job, property, family in UAE) and finances is essential. We specialise in making the cases as strong as possible.
Is travel insurance required for UK Visit Visa?
Not required for a visa, but strongly recommended for travel.
Do I have to book flights and accommodation before my visa is granted?
No, unlike for a Schengen visa, you don’t ned to make any confirmed travel arrangements. It makes a big difference when you aren’t sure whether a visa will be granted.
Can I work or study on a UK Visit Visa?
No paid work allowed – high risk of ban if caught. Short courses (<30 days) or business meetings OK. Overstaying or rule-breaking leads to future refusals and potentially a ban for 10 years.
What documents do I need for a UK Visit Visa from Dubai?
Core docs: proof of employment or other regular income, paid to bank account, so it can be independently verified. Cash income won’t be acceptable, even with a letter from employer, even with the host in the UK covering the costs.
Proof of funds for the trip, such as a savings account or a regular account with a good balance, consistently maintained, ie not deposited just before applying for a visa – that’s an almost certain refusal.
Invitation and funds from the host (if applicable).
Most importantly, proof (independently verifiable) of strong home ties: work, property, family, upcoming medical appointments etc. We provide a detailed checklist and review everything to minimise refusal risks.
How can I prove funds available for the trip to the UK?
If you are funding your own trip, you have to provide bank statements for both source of income and savings to cover the trip. Both aspects need to be covered. We often see people working but their balance remains low after expenses – this won’t work, because there is no spare money left. You can also add separate bank statements for accumulated savings, consistently maintained (or accumulated) over at least last 6 months.
Can I deposit cash today and apply for a visa tomorrow? The balance will look good!
A very common scenario – and an almost certain refusal! The visa officers have seen it all before, they are looking for a pattern, not just the balance. They look how the funds accumulated, how much the applicant earns and how much they spend. The balance has to look “good” for 6 months, or at least regularly accumulating as you are saving for the trip.
Can my British host pay for my trip? Do I still need a proof of my income?
Yes and yes. Your host can cover the costs, such as a family member or a friend (or boyfriend) who is residing in the UK. This would cover the 50% of the “funds requirement”. However, the remaining 50% is still about the applicant, the ties with the UAE or your home country, the intent to leave the UK at the end of the visit (and not try to remain there). In short, you cannot just rely on the British host.
I am living in the UK, can I sponsor my parents or girlfriend to come and visit me for holiday?
Yes, you can, but your support will still only amount to 50% of the case (and its success). The remaining is still about them, the ties with their country and intention to leave after the visit. Working-age parents have to show income from employment (can be one parent) or self-employment in their country, with income clearly seen on the bank account, not cash-in-hand. Retired parents need to show pension, paid to the bank account, or other income like rent or investments.
If you are inviting a potential parter, ie a girlfriend or a boyfriend, they still need to show strong ties with a country where they are currently living or working. A partner cannot switch from a Visitor/tourist status to a residence visa like Partner/Spouse or Skilled Worker. They still have to demonstrate they have “something to come back to”. If your partner is working in the UAE or their country, with the salary paid to their bank account, it usually gets accepted.
Does the above apply if I am a British citizen?
Yes, the above guidance applies regardless of your status in the UK, ie whether you are on a limited work visa (like Skilled Woker), Indefinite Leave or a British citizen. Your support and sponsorship still only give 50% of the success, the rest is up to the applicant.
Can my company cover the costs?
Yes, if you are coming on a business trip and they provide a letter accordingly.
Can I apply for a UK Visit Visa if I have a British spouse?
Yes, but you still need to show intent to return and ties with the UAE or your home country. If your British spouse is living with you outside the UK, such as working in Dubai, you would usually be approved. But if your spouse is in the UK, or moving to the UK, you may be refused, but you could instead apply for a “proper” Spouse visa. A Spouse visa allows living in the UK, using the NHS, but does come with challenging requirements, like income of GBP 29,000 or savings GBP 88,500 as well as expensive Government fee and Immigration Health Surcharge. We help strengthen these cases with extra evidence of your life in Dubai/UAE or elsewhere outside the UK.
I am married to a UK citizen, can I switch from a Visitor to a Spouse visa while in the UK?
No, you cannot switch from a Visitor status (visa or ETA) to any other visa while inside the UK. Unlike the UAE visa regulations, the UK Immigration Rules prohibit that. You can come as a visitor on a visa or ETA, for a holiday or to look for a property /school etc, but then have to return to your country and apply for a “proper” Spouse entry visa. It’s the one with Financial Requirement GBP 29,000 or savings GBP 88,500 as well as expensive Government fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
We can, however, guide you on minimising the time you spend outside the UK. We can prepare your case while you are “visiting” the UK, book biometrics in your country when convenient. Has to be a country of your nationality or where you have a residency status (not a visitor). Then you can travel there just for biometrics and waiting for a visa.
And with the eVisa replacing a vignette (sticker in the passport), you could even travel to the UK while waiting for a Spouse visa, providing you have either ETA or a valid Visitor visa, depending on your nationality. When Spouse visa has been approved, you’d have to leave the UK (for any country) and re-enter as a Spouse to activate” your Spouse status.
What if my UK Visit Visa from Dubai gets refused?
Refusals are very common (often 50% rate for some nationalities). Reasons: insufficient ties, finances, or intent. We review refusals and help reapply with stronger evidence – most succeed second time with our support. Very commonly, parents’ applications get refused due to insufficient ties with their country. However, people with a stable provable job in the UAE or another country, normally have a very good chance of approval.
UK visas seem very difficult, what’s the worst can happen?
A refusal isn’t the worst! If you are refused, there is no right of appeal, but you can re-apply, every time paying the Government fee. However, if one is accused of deception, he/she can be banned for 10 years, with the future automatic refusals. Deception can happen if you don’t disclose relevant information, like previous visits or overstaying, or adverse immigration history from another country (especially if the UK shares info with that country) or a criminal conviction.
My work or settlement visa was refused. Now I would like to just come to the UK for a holiday to see my friends/family.
Tricky one! The visa officers may find it difficult to believe you are “just on holiday’ after trying for a more serious visa. Unfortunately, it is likely to be refused (although you could try and see what happens).
This is particularly the case if you tried to bring your parent(s) on an Adult Dependant Relative visa. Such a visa exists in theory, but almost impossible in practice, only approved in a very few cases for a parent requiring day-to-day care. If your parent is refused an ADR visa (which is a settlement-type), they are not likely to get a tourist visa in the foreseeable future.
Same logic applies if you tried to bring your child to live with you in the UK, but he/she was refused, usually because of Sole Responsibility rule. Or because of being over 18yo. After trying for a settlement-type visa, it is very difficult to get a visa “just for a holiday”. Difficult to prove an intention to leave the UK after applying (but failing) to live here permanently.
What if I want to extend my UK Visit Visa upon arrival?
Extensions are only allowed to make up a total of 6 months. In most cases, it’s better and a lot cheaper to leave the UK for any country for even 1 day and return, hence restarting 6 months again. Otherwise, extensions are only allowed for compassionate reasons, like a serious medical emergency. Also, you cannot switch from a visitor status to any other, like Partner, work etc instead you have to leave the UK and re-apply for a “proper” relevant entry clearance.
As you can see from the above information, we have extensive experience, we know the Rules and we can guide you on a successful application! If we believe you have a weak case, we will honestly tell you. Visit visas have high refusal rates, but our success comes from detailed evidence building and honest advice. We have helped 1000s of people from all over the world to visit the UK, to join their families, and to do business. Expert advice, low fixed fees!
